Within the dotbot configuration, a shell section can be configured to specify commands to be executed. Other than symlinking dotfiles, it can also execute commands to trigger other custom scripts. It's a bash script without any other dependencies besides git and bash.

  • After cloning my repo, I only have to run the install script to set everything up.
  • In fact, Dotbot is installed as a gitmodule so it can be easily updated, following the single source of truth philosophy install, even on a freshly installed system! The reason: I did the accidental deletion instead of a backup (downside #2) DotbotĪfter going through the curated list of dotfile tools, I landed on Dotbot by Anish Athalye.ĭotbot makes installing your dotfiles as easy as git clone $url & cd dotfiles &. the application does a migrationĪfter trying both solutions, I decided on symlinks.
  • Moving symlinks may be troublesome i.e.
  • Some applications may not like that files are links.
  • The downsides of symlinking on the other hand: Symlinking on the other hand are like shortcuts/aliases to the original file.
  • Accidental deletion if 'restore' is run instead of 'backup'.
  • My first approach was 'copying' the files, as in every time there's a backup/restore, the files will be copied from the repository to their destination.
  • Ability to backup other things like npm, pip, brewīut the biggest thing I had to figure out was it better to copy or symlink the dotfiles.
  • Things that I already I wanted to do were: GitHub has a curated list of dotfile tools I explored and eventually came to an approach I liked. The weekend came around and I started exploring the different dotfile options available. This meant switching back and forth between both machines when the newer one was missing something I needed. Recently, I upgraded my Macbook at work but had to spend a few hours setting everything up again from scratch. I am unsure if there are any that interact with multiple DoTs but a quick glance makes it seem like people have made profiles for either Agony or Corruption and not multiple, so maybe this would only be a partial help for you.How I backup, restore and sync preferences and settings across computers. What I am currently trying on my Warlock is a Plater Nameplate profile I downloaded from Wago that makes the nameplate flash purple when Agony is running low and needs to be reapplied. I think the main thing I like about is simply it just displaying these debuffs as a bar helps me personally get the info I need instantly since its the only type of bar tracker I have on my screen. Personally, I have found the nameplate functionality of this addon to be a little too overwhelming as an Affliction Warlock because everything “blends” together for me but when I am playing my elemental shaman it is perfect because I am only tracking Flame Shock and can follow it easier. This addon also lets you track all DoTs you have active on the side of your screen like I described earlier in the post (but you cannot reDoT with these frames, just track) if you don’t want the Nameplate DoT bars. There is an Addon called Nugrunning and it has a really unique function that I think is awesome: You can choose specific debuffs (such as all of your DoTs) to display as a bar, attached to each enemy’s nameplate, that runs out rather than the usual square debuff with a circle timer.

There are addons now that will create frames with all of this information that you cannot interact with so you could only use it to track dot timers but couldn’t refresh dots with them if that would be helpful for you. There used to be an addon that created unitframes that you could interact with in the way you are describing but Blizzard decided that it made multi-dotting too simple and they would need to balance around the existence of those addons so they “broke” that possibility (I never got the chance to try it out, and I’m a liiiittle salty, but I am fine with it no longer working if it would have had too negative of an impact on the game).
